Confirm you are eligible

To vote in a U.S. election you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on Election Day, and a resident of the state where you register. Most states also require you to not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction (rules vary by state). If you are unsure, your state election office can answer eligibility questions.

Register or update your registration

If you have never registered, moved to a new address, or changed your name, you need to re-register. Select your state above and use the "Register to vote" link to go directly to your state's official registration portal. Many states offer online, mail, and in-person options.

Verify your registration is active

After registering, check your status before Election Day. Your state's voter portal (the same one you used to register) will let you look up your name and confirm you are on the rolls. Do this at least two weeks before the deadline.

Know your dates

Registration deadlines, primary dates, and the November general election date are all different. See the key dates for your state in the section above. Put the registration deadline and primary date on your calendar now.

Find your polling place or request a mail ballot

Your assigned polling place may change between elections. Select your state above and use the "Find your polling place" link to confirm your location. If you prefer to vote by mail, check whether your state allows no-excuse absentee voting and request a ballot well before the deadline.
