What you will need

  • Completed and signed Form DS-82
  • Most recent U.S. passport (will be returned)
  • New passport photo (2×2 inches)
  • Check or money order for applicable fees
  • Name change documentation if applicable (certified marriage certificate or court order)

Steps

1

Confirm you qualify to renew by mail

You can renew by mail if ALL of the following are true: your most recent passport was issued when you were 16 or older, it was issued within the last 15 years, it is not damaged, and it is submitted with your renewal application. If any condition is not met, you must apply in person using Form DS-11.

2

Complete Form DS-82

Download Form DS-82 (Passport Renewal Application for Eligible Individuals) from travel.state.gov. Fill it out completely. Unlike Form DS-11, you sign this form yourself before mailing.

3

Get a new passport photo

Your photo must be 2×2 inches, taken within the last 6 months, against a white or off-white background. Many pharmacies and shipping stores offer same-day photos for a few dollars.

4

Include your current passport

Mail your most recent passport with the renewal application. The State Department will cancel it and return it to you with your new passport — typically within the same package.

5

Pay and mail your application

Make your check or money order payable to "U.S. Department of State." Standard service is $130 for a book. Add $60 for expedited service. If you also want a passport card, add $30. Mail everything together using a trackable method — the State Department recommends Priority Mail or better.

Tip: Do not staple anything to your photo or passport. Use a paper clip if you need to keep items together.

6

Track your application

Track your application status at passportstatus.state.gov. You'll receive your new passport by mail, along with your cancelled previous passport.
