How to register a newborn
Registering a newborn involves obtaining a birth certificate and, optionally, a Social Security number — both are needed for healthcare, school enrollment, and future identification.
Birth certificates are issued by the state vital records office. The process begins at the hospital.

What you will need
- ✓Hospital birth worksheet (provided and submitted by the hospital)
- ✓Parents' government-issued photo ID
- ✓Parents' Social Security numbers
Steps
Complete the birth registration form at the hospital
The hospital or birthing center will give you a worksheet to fill out — usually within 24 hours of birth. This captures the child's full name, parents' information, and place of birth. The hospital submits it to the state vital records office on your behalf.
Tip: Choose the full legal name carefully — changing a legal name later requires a court order.
Apply for a Social Security number
You can request a Social Security number for your child on the same hospital worksheet. The Social Security Administration will mail the card separately after the birth is registered.
Tip: Applying at the hospital is the fastest method. Applying later at a Social Security office requires additional documentation and takes longer.
Receive the birth certificate by mail
The state vital records office will mail a certified birth certificate to your home address. Timing varies by state — typically 2–8 weeks.
Order additional certified copies if needed
You will likely need multiple copies over your child's life — for school enrollment, passport applications, and other purposes. Order extras early; the initial copies are cheapest.
