How to get a REAL ID

REAL ID is a federally compliant driver's license or state ID marked with a gold or black star. As of May 2025, it is required to board domestic flights and enter most federal buildings.

1 day at your DMV; processing varies by state (same-day to 2 weeks for a mailed card)
$$20–$90 depending on state; some states charge the same as a standard license
Varies by state

REAL ID is issued by state DMVs under federal standards. Every state now participates, but the process and fees vary. Some states issue REAL ID as the default license; others require you to request it specifically.

What you will need

  • Proof of identity (birth certificate, U.S. passport, or Certificate of Naturalization)
  • Social Security card or document showing your full SSN
  • Two documents proving state residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease agreement)
  • Current driver's license or state ID

Steps

1

Check whether you already have a REAL ID

Look at your current driver's license or state ID. A REAL ID-compliant card will have a gold or black star in the upper right corner. If your current ID has that star, you're already compliant.

2

Gather the required documents

The federal standards require you to prove four things at your DMV visit: identity, Social Security number, two proofs of state residency, and (if applicable) lawful status. Gather these before going.

  • Proof of identity: U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship
  • Proof of Social Security number: Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with your SSN
  • Two proofs of state residency: utility bill, bank statement, mortgage statement, or similar documents with your name and address
  • If foreign-born: proof of lawful status (Green Card, visa, Employment Authorization Document)
3

Visit your state DMV

REAL ID upgrades generally cannot be done online — you must appear in person with original documents. Make an appointment in advance to avoid long wait times.

Tip: Bring originals, not photocopies. The DMV must examine original documents for REAL ID applications.

4

Pay the fee and receive your new ID

Pay your state's REAL ID fee at the DMV. Many states print a temporary paper ID immediately and mail the physical card within 1–2 weeks.
