Steps
Determine if you are applying for the first time or renewing
First-time applicants and those whose last passport was issued more than 15 years ago, issued before age 16, or is lost/stolen must apply in person. If your most recent passport was issued within the last 15 years and you were 16 or older at the time, you can renew by mail.
Complete Form DS-11 (first-time applicants)
Download and fill out Form DS-11 from travel.state.gov. Do not sign it until instructed by the passport acceptance officer — premature signatures are a common reason for delays.
Get a passport photo
Your photo must be 2×2 inches, taken within the last 6 months, against a white or off-white background. Many pharmacies and shipping stores offer same-day passport photos.
Gather your documents
Collect all required documents before visiting an acceptance facility.
Submit your application in person
Bring everything to a passport acceptance facility — most post offices, libraries, and county clerks accept applications. The officer will review your documents, witness your signature, and submit the application to the State Department.
Tip: Schedule an appointment in advance — walk-in availability varies and wait times can be long.
Pay the fees
Two separate fees are required: the application fee ($130 for a book, $30 for a card) paid to the U.S. Department of State by check or money order, and the acceptance fee ($35) paid to the acceptance facility. Credit cards are not accepted for the State Department fee.
Track your application and receive your passport
You can track your application status at passportstatus.state.gov using your last name, date of birth, and last four digits of your Social Security number.
