Steps

1

Confirm the disaster has been declared in your area

FEMA Individual Assistance is only available in counties covered by a presidential disaster declaration. Check whether your county is included at disasterassistance.gov or fema.gov/disaster. Not every disaster receives a presidential declaration.

2

Apply as soon as possible

FEMA sets a registration deadline — typically 60 days after the disaster declaration date. Do not wait for insurance settlements or repairs to begin before filing.

3

Apply online, by phone, or through the FEMA app

Apply at disasterassistance.gov, call 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585), or download the FEMA mobile app. Applying online is fastest. Have your Social Security number, address, insurance information, and current contact details ready.

4

Receive a home inspection (if required)

For housing assistance, FEMA may send an inspector to assess damage. Be available and ensure the inspector can access all damaged areas. Take your own photos and document all damage before any repairs.

Tip: Document all damage with photos and video before starting any cleanup or emergency repairs. FEMA requires evidence of damage — documentation you collected yourself is valuable.

5

Receive your determination and any grants

FEMA will notify you of its determination — typically within 10 days of applying. Approved grants are deposited directly to your bank account or sent by check. If your home is uninhabitable, FEMA may provide temporary housing assistance.

6

Appeal if denied or the amount is insufficient

If your application is denied or you believe the award is too low, you have 60 days from the date of FEMA's decision letter to appeal in writing. Include your disaster registration number and specific reasons for the appeal.
