How to apply for VA benefits

Veterans may be eligible for a wide range of benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs — including disability compensation, health care, education (GI Bill), home loans, and pension. Each benefit has its own eligibility requirements and application process.

Steps

1

Create a VA.gov account

Most VA benefit applications are now handled through va.gov. Create an account using Login.gov or ID.me — both work as sign-in credentials across VA systems.

2

Locate your DD-214

Your Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214) is required for most VA benefits. It proves your military service. If you've lost yours, you can request a replacement at archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records.

3

Identify which benefits you're applying for

Major VA benefits categories include:

  • Disability compensation: monthly tax-free payments for service-connected injuries or illnesses. Apply with VA Form 21-526EZ.
  • Health care: VA medical centers and clinics. Enroll at va.gov/health-care/apply.
  • Education (GI Bill): Post-9/11 GI Bill covers tuition, housing, and books for eligible veterans. Apply with VA Form 22-1990.
  • Home loan guarantee: helps veterans get favorable mortgage terms. Certificate of Eligibility required.
  • Pension: for wartime veterans with limited income who are not receiving disability compensation.
4

File your claim online through VA.gov

Most benefit applications can be submitted directly at va.gov. Filing online is the fastest method and allows you to upload supporting documents and track your claim status.

Tip: Consider working with a VA-accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) such as the American Legion, VFW, or DAV — they provide free claims assistance and can help maximize your benefits.

5

Attend any required examinations

For disability compensation claims, the VA may schedule a Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam to evaluate your condition. Attend this appointment — failure to appear can result in denial.

6

Track your claim and respond to requests

Track the status of your claim at va.gov/claim-or-appeal-status. Respond promptly to any requests for additional information or documentation.
