What you will need

  • Social Security number
  • Birth certificate or other proof of age
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status
  • W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns for the previous year
  • Military discharge papers (if applicable)
  • Bank account information for direct deposit

Steps

1

Decide when to start benefits

This is the most consequential decision in the process. You can begin as early as 62, but benefits are permanently reduced. Full benefits are available at your Full Retirement Age (66–67 depending on birth year). Waiting until 70 increases your benefit by 8% per year beyond your full retirement age.

Tip: There is no universal right answer. If you are in good health and have other income, waiting often results in significantly more lifetime income.

2

Gather your information

You do not need to bring original documents to apply online, but have these ready to reference.

3

Apply online, by phone, or in person

The SSA recommends applying online at ssa.gov — it takes 15–30 minutes and you can save your progress and return later. You can also call 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local SSA office.

Tip: Apply 4 months before you want benefits to begin. Benefits cannot be paid retroactively beyond 6 months.

4

Await a decision

The SSA will review your application and mail a decision letter. If approved, you will receive your first payment within 1–3 months of your requested start date.

5

Set up direct deposit

Payments are made by direct deposit only. Provide your bank routing and account number during the application or set it up separately through your My Social Security account.
