Constitution of the State of Nevada
1864
Nevada's constitution was adopted on July 28, 1864, and the state was admitted to the Union on October 31, 1864 — just days before the presidential election, earning it the nickname "Battle Born State" for its admission during the Civil War. The document was transmitted to Washington by telegraph, the first state constitution sent that way, at a cost of more than three thousand dollars. Nevada has operated under this same constitution ever since, making it one of the older continuously operative state constitutions in the American West.
Preamble
